About Susan Smartt Cook, CPM

My passion is for individualized care and personal relationships with my clients.  To this end, I maintain a low volume practice, which affords me the time and space to get to know each woman and her family.  I am deeply committed to safeguarding the normal processes of labor and birth by empowering each client to care for herself and her baby throughout pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period.  I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss whether or not a home birth with Smartt Birth Midwifery, LLC is the right option for you.

Before I knew anything about birth, doulas, or midwifery, I hoped that my vocation might one day combine wellness, education, and working with women.  After receiving my BA in English, Literature, I moved to Chicago, IL where I discovered the perfect balance of my passions in birth work.  I fell in love with birthing women and their babies through postpartum and labor support doula work with Birthways, Inc., and this quickly spawned my now life-long study of midwifery.  I enrolled with a group of fellow doulas in the National College of Midwifery (NCM) distance learning program along with the Midwest Maternal Child Institute.  Over the course of my training, I was fortunate enough to apprentice with multiple preceptors in the Chicago area including a nurse midwife and a group of family practice physicians as well as a family practice physician based in Embangweni, Malawi where I volunteered for a month in a birth and mobile prenatal clinic (pictured above).  I received my Associates in Midwifery from NCM in 2009 and my Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) national credential from the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) in February of 2010.  Immediately after completing my training in Chicago, I moved to rural Wisconsin for a 10 month internship with a PA/CPM and family practice physician who provide midwifery care to a predominantly Amish population in a small primary care clinic.  I then returned home to Tennessee to marry my life-long friend, Josh, and we have settled for the time being in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Testimonials

"I cannot imagine my labor without Susan there!  She was incredibly calming, encouraging, communicative, and knowledgeable. Susan was indispensable throughout my labor!
   ~ Cara

"Susan was an invaluable asset at the birth of our first son ... Her knowledge, expertise, and physical support were a true blessing to us. I highly recommend Susan to any parents-to-be."
                         ~ Annie

"Susan provided invaluable support and encouragement during my pregnancy ... She is assertive and steadfast, but is never pushy with the mother and father, and has an easygoing personality. She is kind and gentle, and a servant and partner in the labor process. She is appropriately funny, and has the emotional awareness to realize what it is that will make the mother and father feel most comfortable at different times. She is simply a wonderful, trustworthy person, and I think that's the kind of person you want with you when you're doing the monumental work of birthing a baby. I would recommend Susan without reservation"

"Susan provided wonderful guidance, care, and encouragement throughout my pregnancy, labor and birth ... she is genuinely invested in the quality of your birth experience and treats you with compassion and respect, truly taking your individual desires to heart."
                          ~ Whitney

"Susan was the doula at the birth of my daughter in 2008. She has a wealth of knowledge and a wonderful personality, effervescent but down-to-earth, and we felt grateful to have her presence at an intimate time in our lives. She was of great help and comfort before and after labor as well as during it. When she walked into the room during my active labor, she acted confidently but with sensitivity to my changing needs and desires. I was able to have the natural birth I had planned for, and it was more comfortable and celebratory thanks to her presence. I can’t recommend her highly enough."
                           ~ Zoe

"Susan was unbelievably helpful before and during my labor. She helped calm my fears in the weeks leading up to the birth, soothed me during the pain of childbirth (which lasted 31 hours!), and followed up afterward, when I was struggling with breastfeeding ... I truly feel like I couldn’t have done it all without her support!"
